Screen Grease III and UI (User Interface), 2017, is a photographic diptych presented in two lightboxes. The left image shows the thumb grease on my smartphone screen illuminated by reflected daylight. The adjacent image depicts radiant laptop light entering my partner’s pupil and reflecting off the retina inside her eye. Both photographs document intimate and personal bodily experiences of information and communication technology reminiscent of Donna Haraway’s essay “A Cyborg Manifesto” from 1984. Born in 1987, I have become increasingly dispersed across digital networks, an everyday cyborg, penetrated by light and leaving traces of my mammalian touch upon sensitive surfaces.
